PDM v/s PLM

PRODUCT DATA MANAGEMENT (PDM) v/s PRODUCT LIFECYCLE MANAGEMENT (PLM)

In this modern world, we are surrounded by a lot of applications used in the system whether we go for organizations or home. Anyways, for the persons working in the domain of product development, might be aware with the applications of product lifecycle management. But most of the design engineers used to get confused b/w product data management (PDM) and product lifecycle management (PLM) applications. The aim for this post is to give a clear picture of PDM and PLM applications. As the name indicates, both of the terms deal with product design and management.

Product Data Management (PDM) system:-

A PDM system is a storage drive having an infinite disk space used for storing CAD models, drawings, BOM and other documents concerned with the product by checking out and checking in the files. The drawings and models are checked out and checked in while the documents are uploaded and downloaded in the PDM application. Intralink application is an example of PDM system.

Product data management system serves as a product and process knowledge repository which promotes secured data exchange and integration among all the stakeholders including design engineers, project managers, sales managers etc. The functions involved in this system are updating, revising and release of models and drawings.

Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system:-

As the name indicates, this system deals with the management of entire lifecycle of a product. Product data management (PDM) system comes under product lifecycle management (PLM) system and enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. Teamcenter, Windchill are the common examples of PLM systems. There are basically two types of product development strategies. Among these, one is ‘starting from scratch’ which involves designing a new product which is not existing in the market as per the need or demand of the product from the side of customer and other is ‘modifying an existing product’ which involves updating and modification of product as per the customer needs.

A product undergoes different stages in its lifecycle independent of the type of product development. The different stages are: - design, prototype, production, inventory and obsolete (end of the product). The activities such as ECR/ECO process, updating BOM, managing change notifications and problem reports, communication with the vendors or suppliers etc. can be performed with the help of PLM system.

For efficient and proper working of PLM systems, it requires more and more amount of involvement and integration among various departments of organization.
