SAINT VENANT’S THEORY

MAXIMUM PRINCIPLE STRAIN THEORY (SAINT VENANT’S THEORY)

As per the maximum principle strain theory, the elastic failure occurs when the greatest principle (or normal) strain reaches the elastic limit point (or strain yield point) as determined from a simple tensile test. This theory is focused towards strain occurring during failure.
According to this theory, the elastic failure will occur, when
(1/E) [σ1 – ν(σ2 + σ3)]  =  σe/E

This theory is also known as Saint Venant’s theory. This theory over estimates the elastic strength of ductile materials.
